Every industry has questions that separate serious providers from operators hoping you won't ask. In dental tourism, these are the fifteen. Email them, ask them on the video call, or send them by WhatsApp — a quality clinic answers all fifteen easily, because they answer them every week. Evasion on any of them is your answer.
About the clinician
1. Who exactly will perform my procedure, and what are their credentials? You want a name, a university, a graduation year, and — for implants, root canals, or complex prosthetics — a specialty degree. "Our team of experts" is not a name.
2. How many of this exact procedure do you perform per year? Volume builds skill. An implantologist placing 200+ implants annually is a different proposition from a generalist placing 15.
3. Can I speak with the treating dentist directly before booking? The video consult is non-negotiable. If the dentist is never available before your deposit, they may be equally unavailable after it.
About the plan and materials
4. Will you provide a written, itemized treatment plan in USD before I book travel? Line items, not bundles. Every crown, graft, extraction, and scan priced.
5. Which implant system / crown material do you use, and will I get documentation? Named brands (Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Neodent, MIS; Emax/zirconia for crowns) plus an implant passport your future dentist can reference.
6. What imaging will you take before treatment? Surgical work needs 3D CBCT imaging, not just a panoramic X-ray. On-site is best.
7. What could change the price after you examine me in person — and by how much? Honest answer: some things (bone quality, hidden decay) are only fully visible in person. Good clinics bracket the uncertainty in advance; bad ones weaponize it in the chair.
About the schedule
8. How many days do I need in-country, realistically? Compare their answer to standard timelines (crowns/veneers 5–8 days; implants two trips). Anyone dramatically faster is cutting a corner you'll pay for later.
9. For implants: how do you handle the healing period? The correct answer involves months of osseointegration and a second trip (or coordination with a US dentist for the restoration). "Teeth in a day" has legitimate versions — but for specific cases, with specific protocols they should be able to explain.
About what happens after
10. What warranty do you offer, in writing, and what does it cover? Common at quality clinics: 1–5+ years on crowns and implant hardware. Ask what happens if a crown fails at month 14 — flight covered? Redone free? Coordinated with a US dentist?
11. How do you handle post-op questions once I'm home? You want a named channel (WhatsApp), a response-time expectation, and willingness to share records with your US follow-up dentist.
12. What's your protocol if I have a complication while in Colombia? Same-day post-op visits, an emergency line, and hospital relationships for the rare serious event.
About the business
13. What's your physical address, and is the clinic registered with the health authority? Verifiable REPS registration and habilitación — covered in depth in the evaluation guide.
14. How do I pay, when, and what's refundable? Deposits should be modest and creditable; full payment shouldn't precede examination. Know the card fees vs. cash/transfer options.
15. Can you share recent international patient references or reviews for my procedure? Not testimonials on their website — reviewable, recent, third-party feedback from patients who flew in for what you're flying in for.
Fifteen questions sounds like a lot until you remember what's at stake: your health, and — for big cases — five figures. The clinics in the Colombia Medical network answer all of these before we ever refer a patient; dental cases start at ColombiaDentist.co.
