Comparison
Los Algodones vs Medellín for Dental Work
One is a walk across the border from Yuma. The other is a flight to the Andes. Which fits depends on how long your treatment takes and how often you need to come back.
Los Algodones and Medellín sit at opposite ends of the dental travel spectrum. Los Algodones is a border town you can walk into from California. Medellín is a city of millions that most Americans reach by flying several hours.
The best choice depends less on the town and more on the job. Short, simple work favors the border. Long, staged treatment favors a place where you can stay put. This guide uses government and published sources only; we have not visited or tested any clinic.
What Los Algodones is
Los Algodones is a small town in the municipality of Mexicali, Baja California. It sits on the border just south of Andrade, California, and a few miles west of Yuma, Arizona. Mexico's 2010 census counted 5,474 residents.
It is known as "Molar City" because of the many dental offices serving visitors from the US and Canada. A January 2026 report from KAWC, Yuma's public radio station, says most clinics and pharmacies are within about three blocks of the border. The same report puts the drive from the western edge of Yuma at about 15 minutes.
Business is seasonal. Many visitors are winter residents of Yuma and nearby Winterhaven. Caltrans described peak season at the crossing as late September through April when it rebuilt the pedestrian approach in 2014.
KAWC reported that some business owners saw fewer visitors in early 2026, especially from Canada. One dentist told the station she had absorbed higher equipment costs from tariffs rather than raise prices. That is one clinic's account, not a market-wide figure.
Crossing at Andrade, step by step
The Andrade port of entry is at 235 Andrade Road in Winterhaven, California, about 2 miles south of Interstate 8 on State Route 186. Most dental visitors park on the US side and walk across.
- Pack the right document. To re-enter the US by land, CBP accepts a passport, a US passport card, a trusted traveler card such as SENTRI or NEXUS, or an enhanced driver's license. Children under 16 may show a birth certificate.
- Park on the US side. The Quechan Tribe runs the Andrade parking lot at 270 Algodones Road. Its page, updated January 30, 2026, lists day parking for cars at $10 and overnight at $15 per night, with a 3-day overnight limit. Hours are listed as 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Arizona time.
- Check port hours and waits. Andrade is not a 24-hour crossing. The third-party site Bordify lists its hours as 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Confirm on CBP's Border Wait Times page the day you go.
- Walk to your appointment. Most clinics are a short walk from the gate.
- Declare on the way back. CBP asks travelers to be ready to declare everything bought abroad. That includes medicines.
The FDA says it is generally illegal for individuals to import drugs for personal use. It may allow up to a three-month supply in narrow cases, such as when effective treatment is not available in the US. Controlled substances fall under DEA rules. Ask your US doctor before buying medicine abroad.
What Medellín offers instead
Medellín is Colombia's second-largest city and a common choice for longer dental trips. Its main airport, José María Córdova (MDE), is in Rionegro, about 20 km southeast of the city. Nonstop routes have connected it to Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York JFK, and Houston.
US citizens do not need a visa for stays of 90 days or less, according to the State Department. Your passport must be valid for the full stay. You must also file the free Check-MIG migration form before flying in and out.
The practical difference is time. In Medellín you can rent an apartment, finish a multi-stage plan with one team, and recover nearby. Our guide on why people choose Medellín for dental work covers the city in more depth.
Short trip vs longer stay
Treatment length decides most of this comparison. Ask each clinic for a dated schedule of every appointment before you commit.
When a short trip makes sense
- Cleanings, exams, and simple fillings.
- A single crown, if the clinic can finish it within your visit.
- Adjustments or repairs on earlier work by the same clinic.
- You live in or winter near Yuma and can come back easily.
For a border-area patient, the ability to return in a day is the biggest advantage. A loose crown is a short drive, not a flight.
When a longer stay makes sense
- Implants, which usually need healing time between stages.
- Full-arch work or many crowns and veneers at once.
- Cases that need several specialists to coordinate.
- You would otherwise make several long trips.
The ADA notes that many dental procedures are surgical and may need months of healing. If your plan needs two stages months apart, both cities may need two trips. The border's advantage then is cheaper, shorter return visits. Medellín's is fewer, longer ones.
Weighing travel costs
Los Algodones costs little to reach if you live nearby, but a lot if you must fly to Arizona first. Medellín needs flights and lodging either way. Work through both with our break-even guide for flights and hotels.
Advisories and personal safety
Both destinations fall under Level 3, "Reconsider travel," in State Department ratings checked October 30, 2026.
Los Algodones
Mexico overall is Level 2, under an advisory issued May 29, 2026. Baja California is Level 3. The advisory limits US government staff in the Mexicali Valley. It says staff may reach Los Algodones only through the US, via the Andrade port of entry.
Staying in Yuma or Winterhaven and crossing for the day keeps your time in Mexico short. That matches the route the advisory allows for US government staff.
Medellín
Colombia is Level 3 under the advisory published March 31, 2026. Five areas are Level 4, and Medellín is not one of them. The State Department's Colombia page warns that criminals use dating apps to lure, drug, and rob foreigners. Plan your recovery days with that in mind.
For both trips, the CDC advises checking with your doctor 4 to 6 weeks before travel. It also recommends travel health insurance that covers medical evacuation.
Verifying a clinic in either place
A dense cluster of clinics does not mean every one is equal. Check the clinic and the dentist yourself.
In Los Algodones
Mexican dental offices file a sanitary operating notice (COFEPRIS-05-036) with a named responsible dentist. A Puebla state inspection guide says the dentist's degree and cédula profesional should be displayed for patients. You can search a dentist's full name on the SEP's professional registry to confirm the degree and any specialty.
In Medellín
Colombian providers must be registered in REPS, the Ministerio de Salud's register of enabled providers and services. Individual dentists appear in ReTHUS, searchable through the ministry's SISPRO portal. Ask for the clinic's REPS code and the dentist's full name, then look both up.
Our dental tourism safety checklist lists the other questions to settle before you pay a deposit.

FAQ
Do I need a passport to go to Los Algodones for the day?
You need a document CBP accepts to re-enter the US by land. That can be a passport, a US passport card, a trusted traveler card such as SENTRI or NEXUS, or an enhanced driver's license. Children under 16 may use a birth certificate.
Where do people park for Los Algodones?
Many visitors use the Quechan Tribe's Andrade parking lot at 270 Algodones Road on the US side. As of its January 30, 2026 update, day parking for a car is $10 and overnight is $15 per night, with a 3-day overnight limit.
Is Los Algodones safe?
The State Department rates Baja California Level 3, Reconsider travel, and Mexico overall Level 2, as of October 30, 2026. Its advisory says US government staff may reach Los Algodones only through the Andrade port of entry. Read the full advisory before you go.
Is Medellín better for implants than Los Algodones?
Neither city is better in general. Implants usually involve healing time between stages, so the question is logistics. If you live near Yuma, short repeat trips may be easiest. If you live far from both, a longer stay in one city may mean fewer flights.
Can I bring medicine back from a Los Algodones pharmacy?
Be careful. The FDA says importing drugs for personal use is generally illegal, with narrow exceptions of up to a three-month supply. Controlled substances fall under DEA rules. Declare everything at CBP and ask your US doctor first.
